| Notes | Requires an AMD GPU — NVIDIA GPUs are NOT supported, and Intel GPU support is experimental and buggy. An internal NVMe SSD is required (40GB minimum; 200GB+ recommended for games). Laptop dual-GPU setups (e.g. NVIDIA Optimus) are not supported. Installing on non-Steam-Deck PCs is officially in beta. SteamOS is Arch-based and continuously updated; AMD RDNA2 (RX 6000-series) and newer work best. |
Description
SteamOS is Valve's gaming-focused Linux distribution, built on Arch Linux and best known for powering the Steam Deck handheld. It boots into a console-like Steam Big Picture interface and uses Proton to run Windows games. As of SteamOS 3.8 it can be installed on some standard PCs, though it requires an AMD GPU and remains in beta for non-Valve hardware.
